The administration of US President Joe Biden is preparing to announce an additional $800 million in military aid. Ukraine and may announce it today, three people briefed on the matter told Reuters on Thursday.
Biden will order the grant, using his prerogative to approve the transfer of surplus weapons from US military stockpiles, the sources said.
The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the announcement could be made this or next week and noted that the new equipment package could change in size or cost. The White House declined to comment.
Since the “special operation” — as Moscow describes it — in Ukraine began on February 24, the armed conflict has turned into a war of attrition, which has been fought mainly in the east and south of Ukrainian territory.
Washington has already provided Kyiv with billions of dollars of military aid.
New weapons from Estonia
In the meantime, the Estonian government plans to supply Ukraine with additional weapons, in particular anti-tank and anti-tank weapons, to help it in its war with Russia, Tallinn said on Thursday.
The Baltic state, a member of both the EU and NATO, will also support the UK’s initiative to expand the training of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, while providing Ukraine with a field hospital in cooperation with Germany, the Estonian Ministry of Defense specified.
“The fighting in Ukraine continues. Although more and more weapons from the West are coming to the front lines, we have a moral responsibility to continue to support Ukraine,” said Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur.
“They are fighting for our common values, and if there is something that we can send to the Ukrainians, we must do it,” he added.
The Estonian government says it has sent 250 million euros ($252 million) worth of military aid to Ukraine since the Russian military invasion began nearly six months ago.
Among the weapons he supplied her were American-made anti-tank mines, as well as American-made Javelin anti-tank missiles.
The small Baltic nation of 1.2 million also supplied Kyiv with several howitzers from former warehouses in East Germany, which was approved by the German government.
