On the last day of 1921, the Cathimerini published a text by G. A. Vlachos called Questions sent from Rome.

On the day this was written, Prime Minister D. Gounaris – “hopeful and terrified,” according to Vlachos – and a Greek delegation arrived in Cannes for a conference to be held there. “The Greek world,” the text notes, “is watching with anxiety—anxiety of hopes and fears—these last stops on the Prime Minister’s journey, which also mark the last stops of the Greek drama.

And rightly so, because while the whole world here and elsewhere is busy healing the great wounds opened by the war, Greece is finally alone in the uphill battle for her national dreams.

He then referred to the attitude of the Allies, writing: “Let us therefore leave M. Bouillon to cultivate the field, which will soon bring much benefit with his hands. [σ.σ. της Γαλλίας] thorn, and let us ask: Rome?… The eternal city, in which temples of incomprehensible greatness are erected on every corner to the God of Christians, will it also turn against the side of their murderer? […] Thus, while the Frenchman has determined his position, and although the Italian does not seem to have determined his feelings either, he always remains the final and sole defender of the right or trans-Channel maritime kingdom. England wears it “out of neutrality”.

The March on Cannes ended with the resignation of French Prime Minister No. 1. Brian, December 30th.

This is reported by telegrams from Paris: “Mr. Brian believes that his prestige has decreased from constant attacks on him, so he cannot remain in power.”

At the same time, they reported that Brian “personally communicated with Mustafa Kemal and recommended that the Ankara government present evidence of its moderation without asking anything but the Conference as it was raised on the question of the East” and that “any excessive demand for this would make him an enemy Western Europe and create prejudice against Turkey.”
