Residents of two villages in southern Russia, near the border with Ukraine, were evacuated on Thursday evening due to a fire at a nearby ammunition depot, an official said, adding that no one was injured, Agerpres reported with reference to Reuters.
The governor of the Belgorod region of Russia, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said that emergency workers are investigating the causes of the fire near the settlements of Tomonovo and Soloty, which are 15 kilometers from Ukraine. He did not provide any other details.
A Ukrainian news site published a video purportedly showing a huge fireball spewing a plume of smoke from the base. Reuters says it cannot independently verify the authenticity of the recording.
Russia was accused on Tuesday of sabotaging an ammunition depot in annexed Crimea, which triggered a series of explosions.
Last week, there were reports of explosions at a military base in Crimea, which Moscow explained at the time as an accident.
In recent months, Governor Gladkov has blamed Ukrainian forces for a series of bombings in and around Belgorod, about 400 miles south of Moscow.
