Undoubtedly Joy Division his musical heroes Manchester, a city that somehow left its mark on the history of modern music. It is therefore quite logical that the city wanted to honor the group, which it did, among other things, with the help of murals.
In particular, until recently port street Manchester had a large mural with his image Jan Curtis and lead singer of Joy Division. The mural in question was created in October 2020 by a street artist. Axle P19, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day – it is known that during his lifetime Curtis suffered from epileptic seizures. For this project, Akse P19 took as a basis a classic photograph of the singer taken from his performance in Brussels in 1979, a year before he committed suicide.
Recently, however, residents of Manchester have noticed that the mural is missing. In her place an advertisement for H’s new record was posted, rapper from the city.
It is clear that this move caused a backlash. Among those who expressed their displeasure were Peter Hook, former bassist for Joy Division, who stated that it was “very sad” to see something like this.
Work has begun on the restoration of the Ian Curtis mural in the North Quarter after the advertisement. @OfficialAitchthe new album was drawn over it. @OfficialAitch tweeted, “There’s no way I would want to be disrespectful to a local hero like Ian.” pic.twitter.com/EtnZuAY2Vd

Aitch, in turn, was quick to clear things up, explaining that he had no idea this was going to happen: βIt turned out that the iconic Ian Curtis mural on Port Street was covered in my new album cover. This is my first time hearing about this and my team will fix it immediately. In no way did I mean to disrespect a local hero like Yang. I just don’t choose where the ads will be placed.”
However, H’s position has been attributed to Peter Hook.

When it’s his turn mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham, took a stance on the issue, tweeting, “This shouldn’t have happened and it shouldn’t have been put in there. This is a real symbol of our city. The work must be completely restored and remain there for a long time, in his memory. Thanks to everyone who showed what Yang means to us.”
