President of France Emmanuel Macron today he will have a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky about the situation at the Russian-controlled Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine.
Both leaders will communicate “mainly to discuss the situation around the Zaporozhye railway station,” the French presidency said.
This largest station in Europe came under the control of Russian forces in early March, at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24th.
Since the end of July, several artillery attacks on the plant have been reported, blamed on each other by the opposing sides, raising fears that a nuclear catastrophe could be provoked. This issue was discussed last week in the UN Security Council.
A “catastrophe” at the nuclear power plant will threaten all of Europe, Zelenskiy warned on Monday, accusing the Russian military of “bombing nearby cities and towns” from the nuclear plant.
The last telephone conversation between the two leaders took place on 1 August.
Macron, who has been on holiday since July 29, then expressed satisfaction with the resumption of maritime grain shipments from southern Ukraine, which were blocked due to the Russian attack.
