David Popovich, the world and European champion in the 100m and 200m freestyle at the age of just 17, has been praised by Michael Phelps’ coach, who compared him to the legendary American swimmer.
Popovici is the world and European champion among adults in the distances of 100 and 200 meters freestyle, and in the first mentioned event he is also the world record holder.
Bob Bowman, former coach of Michael Phelps, claims that David Popovich and the American champion are similar
Bob Bowman believes that Popovich and Phelps have a similar build and swim the same way.
“David has great speed. He not only knows how to swim very well, but is also able to efficiently save his energy over the entire distance.
He reminds me of Michael Phelps. They were built like that: very lean guys who develop speed by reducing drag, which is the best way to perform in the 200m.” – Bob Bowmanaccording to swimswam.com.
Michael Phelps is a two-time world champion at the distance of 200 meters freestyle (2005 and 2007), and also has the title of Olympic champion (2008). He was also the fastest man in the world in this event (the 2009 record was broken by Paul Biedermann at 1:42:00).
David will also perform in Rome at the distance of 400 m freestyle (races are scheduled for August 17).
