James Vasquez, the most famous American serviceman fighting in Ukraine, told why he volunteered to fight against the Russian invaders.
“It was my grandmother. Her family was slaughtered by the Russians during World War II. She is the only survivor. That’s the main reason I’m here. Her name was Ana and she was amazing,” Vasquez wrote on his Twitter page.

Asked by his nearly 400,000 followers for more details, the US serviceman said his grandmother was from Latvia and fled the war, and the French actress pretended to be her sister to keep her alive.
Vasquez also said that the woman died in 2003 and that he spent a lot of time listening to her stories. Regarding the situation in Ukraine, he said that “history repeats itself, but this will be the last time.”
The US military has published unprecedented footage from the battles
Vasquez became known in the early stages of the war for his numerous posts sharing video footage of the battles against the Russian invaders at a time when the international community was waiting to see if the Ukrainian defenders would be able to repel the invading Russian forces around Kyiv and major cities such as Kharkiv.
Videos posted on Twitter on March 25 show that Vasquez also took part in fighting in the Kyiv area as part of Ukrainian operations to liberate the region after Moscow’s Defense Ministry announced a “dramatic reduction” in its military activity in the region.
Vasquez also published images of equipment received by the Ukrainian military and foreign volunteers, as well as combat vehicles captured from the Russian army.
He returned to the United States in the second half of May to attend to personal matters. While at home, he said he had finally managed to upload most of the footage he shot during the war, releasing images of unprecedented clarity and duration during the battles.
After selling the house in the USA, the American serviceman announced on August 10 that he returned to Ukraine and “took on everything” in the fight against the Russian occupiers.
Later, he published new videos, including one that showed how American engineers who volunteered for the Armed Forces of Ukraine operate.
