The government wants the whole truth about surveillance to come out, says the Minister of Justice Costas Tsiarasnoting that the issue needs to be considered within a certain period of time.
“If you look at all this over time, since the discussion was focused on what happened in the recent past, it makes sense to look at it over a period of time. Let’s see if there were certain or different practices in the past, under different governments, and make an overall assessment and see what initiatives we need to take,” the Minister of Justice said on the air of the SKAI TV channel.
He pointed out that “the government not only requested an investigation and a reconvening of the Committee on Institutions and Transparency, but also stated that it would facilitate this process in every possible way.”
“Perhaps there are some institutional issues that the Prime Minister himself highlighted in his address to citizens. Is there an institutional issue with how EYP’s legal ties are established? It is clear that through what has surfaced, there is, but the whole service, which gives a lot to the state, should not be discredited,” the minister stressed.
As Mr. Tsiaras noted, “for the first time, the prime minister sees that there is a problem and wants to take the lead in reforming it.”
“Everything that exists must be brought into the light, we have been talking about this from the very beginning. I said that the case of tapping Mr. Androulakis’ phone is a matter of democracy, I said that it is an issue that needs to be considered seriously and with all the details,” he said.
He also said that until 2018, two prosecutors controlled each respective issue, which has changed under the SYRIZA government.
