Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klychko said in an interview with the Ukrainian site “Babel” that he was threatened by an official from the office of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
The former professional boxer stated this after he signed an open letter demanding the return of Ukrainian citizenship to the businessman who served as the head of territorial defense in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Gennady Korban.
On July 22, he was refused entry to Ukraine and his passport was confiscated at the border due to deprivation of citizenship. The border guards, who seized the document from him, reported that he was stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship by decree of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
Thousands of Ukrainians, including more than 100 public figures and politicians, signed an open letter calling for the event to be canceled. A total of 112 pages of signatures were collected.
Zelenskyi’s office told him what Vitaliy Klitschko says
“I will tell you a secret. After I signed the letter, we had a conversation with the hint: “You are so proactive now that I haven’t stripped you of your German citizenship yet.” I answered: “I will be very surprised if I show you my German passport,” Vitaliy Klitschko said in an interview with Babel journalists.
The mayor of Kyiv says that although he has lived a significant part of his life in Germany and the USA, he does not have a passport other than Ukrainian.
“And I had every opportunity to get citizenship of these countries, I even had offers to do it, but for what? I was and remain a citizen of Ukraine,” Vitaliy Klitschko emphasized.
When asked if this message was sent to him by the Office of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the mayor of Kyiv ironically replied:
“From where else? From Zhek?”.
In July, Volodymyr Zelenskyi fired several Ukrainian officials, including Kyiv’s Prosecutor General and the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), over suspicions of their subordinates collaborating with the Russian invasion forces.
Two days later, the president of Ukraine also dismissed the heads of four regional offices of the SBU.
