Ukraine: “The danger grows every day” at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant

Dangers around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in the south Ukrainewhere Moscow and Kyiv have been accusing each other of shelling for more than a week, “increasing every day,” the mayor of Ergondar, the city where the station is located, said today.

“The risks are growing every day,” Mayor Dmitry Orlov told AFP by phone, adding that shootings at the station were a daily occurrence and denouncing Russia’s “blatant nuclear terrorism” that “could end unpredictably at any moment.”

“Every day and night, the nuclear plant is under mortar fire from the occupied villages,” he added, explaining that “the situation is serious, and the most worrying thing is the lack of a de-escalation process.”

Energondar, like the Zaporizhzhya NPP, has been occupied by Russian troops since the beginning of March. Faithful to Kyiv, Dmitry Orlov took refuge in Zaporozhye, the capital of the region.

According to him, in the last 24 hours, the city of Ergondar began to be shelled, “which had not happened before,” and today a 45-year-old civilian was killed.
