NATO: Macron signs accession protocols for Sweden and Finland

The president Emmanuel Macron signed and ratified on behalf of France its accession protocols Sweden And her Finland in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, announced the Elysee Palace.

On August 2, the French National Assembly approved the accession of the two Scandinavian states to NATO.

“The dominant choice of Finland and Sweden, European partners, will increase their security in the face of the threat of a neighbor and will make a significant contribution, given their capabilities, to our collective (defensive) position and to our European security,” the French chairman said.

Stockholm and Helsinki made the historic decision to renounce their neutrality due to the military invasion of Russia in Ukraine 24 February. Although they were partners in NATO, they remained outside the alliance for decades.

The approval of all thirty of its member states is required for two countries to join it and for them to apply Article 5

Article 5 of NATO’s founding convention, adopted in 1949 at the start of the Cold War, provides for a joint response in the event of an attack against any member state.

The most serious obstacle to the completion of the integration process is characterized from the very beginning Turkeyas Ankara threatens to “freeze” it because it primarily accuses Stockholm, as well as Helsinki, of protecting members of the separatist armed Kurdish movement of the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) and other organizations that it calls “terrorist”.
