A gunman wounded seven people on a bus carrying Jewish worshipers to Jerusalem on Sunday, Israeli authorities and witnesses said, describing the incident as a suspected Palestinian attack.
The gunman fled the scene in Jerusalem’s Old City, home to holy sites for Jews, Muslims and Christians and one of the areas where Palestinians want to establish a state.
Israel considers all of Jerusalem its capital – a status that is not recognized internationally.
The attack happened early Sunday morning as Jews were leaving rituals at the Western Wall to mark the end of the Sabbath.
“Jerusalem is our capital and a tourist center for all religions,” Prime Minister Yair Lapid said in a statement, adding that Israeli security forces would “restore calm.”
