Spain: One dead after stage collapse at music festival

One person was killed and dozens injured when high winds collapsed part of the stage at a music festival near the Spanish city of Valencia early in the morning, regional emergency services said.

Other infrastructure was also damaged when strong gusts of wind blew through the Medusa Festival, a major six-day electronic music festival in the city of Cougera on Spain’s east coast, south of Valencia.

Of those injured, three have serious injuries and 14 have minor injuries, regional emergency services reported on Twitter. Later, the regional health authorities reported that 40 people were being treated.

“We are devastated by what happened this morning,” organizers said in a statement on the festival’s Facebook page.

According to them, “emergency” weather conditions caused damage to various infrastructures at the festival site.

“At around 4 am, an unexpected and very strong wind damaged some areas of the festival, forcing the management to immediately decide to evacuate the concert venue in order to guarantee the safety of visitors, workers and artists,” the organizers said.

The festival is currently on hold, they added.

The national meteorological service AEMET said there were “strong gusts and a sudden increase in temperature” during the night, with winds reaching 82 km/h at Alicante airport in the Valencia region.
