President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky demanded yesterday, Thursday, that government officials stop talking to journalists about the tactics of his country’s forces against Russia, which he called “blatantly irresponsible.”
“The war is definitely not the time for vanity and loud statements. The less details you give about our defense plans, the better for their implementation,” the Ukrainian head of state said in his speech last night.
“If you want sensational headlines, that’s one thing – and it’s frankly irresponsible. If you want Ukraine’s victory, that’s another matter, and you must be aware of your responsibility for every word you say about our state’s plans to defend or fight back.”
Zelenskiy has addressed the warning to government officials, local elected officials, the military and others who he says are commenting on events on the front lines.
After explosions at a Russian airbase in Crimea On Tuesday, the American newspapers The New York Times and Washington Post, citing unnamed Ukrainian officials, reported that it was an operation by Ukrainian forces. The government in Kyiv has refused to confirm its involvement in the bombings.
Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said at least one case was under investigation in which officials spoke to the media.
“Such a leak puts obstacles in the plans of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as the enemy corrects his actions and uses this information against us,” he explained on Facebook.
Last month the President of Ukraine removed his old friend and colleague from the leadership of the special services and the Prosecutor General from his post.
The purge, the largest since the start of the war on February 24, was attributed by Zelensky to the failure to root out what he called Russian spy networks.
