The Bulgarian Navy will conduct two more large-scale exercises with international participation by the end of 2022 with the port of Varna, Commander of the Bulgarian Navy, Rear Admiral Kyryl Mykhaylov, told the national news agency BTA on Friday.
One of the exercises, codenamed Poseidon, is Bulgarian-Romanian, but it is also open to other navies. It focuses on mine action. The exercises are traditional and not caused by the war in Ukraine, the rear admiral reminded, reports Agerpres.
The second exercise called “Triton” is specialized for divers, the commander explained. Participants will practice performing various tasks, including demining.
“The war in Ukraine radically changed our work and presented us with new challenges, including the danger of mines,” said Mykhailov at the ceremony marking the 143rd anniversary of the Bulgarian Navy. He thanked the sailors for their daily work to ensure the safety of cargo and waterways.
The rear admiral clarified that Bulgarian sailors have already responded to more than 40 signals about floating objects. “We will continue to respond to every report so that people are calm and the safety of the cargo is guaranteed,” he added.
