Metallica, Mariah Carey and the Jonas Brothers will headline a grand concert in New York’s Central Park celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Global Citizen Festival, hosted by an international non-profit organization fighting extreme poverty on September 24.
On the same day, there will be another concert in Accra, Ghana with Usher, SZA and HER.
The day will be less of a celebration than a call to action to address many international crises immediately, said Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans. “In fact, we are at a critical tipping point where the pandemic has plunged almost 100 million people into extreme poverty, and now Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has made the situation much worse,” he said. “Up to 323 million people now face acute hunger. And if we don’t take urgent action now, more than 200 million people could plunge into extreme poverty by November, bringing the total number of people living in extreme poverty to over a billion.”
It should be noted that international organizations consider people in extreme poverty those who receive 1.9 dollars a day.
Quantico star Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who will host the event in Central Park, said Global Citizen has always encouraged people to use their voice to get world leaders and decision makers to take action against hunger and poverty. However, the need to focus on these issues is now even more pressing.
“If we’re going to do anything about this, we need an urgent mobilization,” Chopra Jonas told The Associated Press. “So just to see all these people from different walks of life, different professions, coming together, motivated to really urgently change something is so inspiring.”
Pop star Charlie Puth, Latin American actress Rosalia, country star Mickey Geaton and Italian band Måneskin will also perform in Central Park, AP reported. The entrance will be free.
