Russian journalist Marina Ovsyannikova, who interrupted the live broadcast of the state TV channel while holding an anti-war poster, was sent under house arrest by a Moscow court, the Russian news agency TASS reports.
Journalist Marina Ovsyannikova is being investigated for “discrediting” Putin’s army and for “spreading false information” about Russian troops, her lawyer said, AFP reports.
According to lawyer Dmytro Zakhvatov, the charges were brought as a result of a protest in which his client took part on Sofia Embankment in Moscow on July 15.
In mid-July, Marina Ovsyannikova posted images on Telegram of herself holding a placard outside the Kremlin protesting the killing of Ukrainian children, calling Putin a “murderer.”
The court granted the request of the investigation and ordered Maryna Ovsyannikova under house arrest until October 9, TASS reports.
The Criminal Code of Russia stipulates that “public dissemination of knowingly false information about the use of the armed forces of the Russian Federation” is punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 years.
The police searched the journalist’s home
She has already been sentenced to pay some fines for “discrediting” the Russian army, in particular through messages criticizing Russian aggression against Ukraine on social networks.
But these fines did not deter her from recidivism, and now the journalist faces criminal liability with potentially much more severe consequences.
On Wednesday morning, the Russian authorities searched the apartment of journalist Maryna Ovsyannikova, NEXTA reports.
Ovsyannikova became famous around the world in March when she appeared on the set of the pro-Kremlin Russian channel Pervyi Kanal, where she worked, showing messages against the Russian offensive in Ukraine and against the “propaganda” of pro-government Russian media. .
However, the 44-year-old journalist is not unanimously evaluated by the Russian opposition, some of its representatives reproach her for having worked for years on a state TV channel.
