The Disney group, thanks to its three streaming services, has overtaken Netflix in the number of users. The company also announced that Disney+ will also have an ad-supported version at the end of the year for $8 a month, up from $8 a month for the current version in the US.
Disney has reached 221 million users through its three streaming services: Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, while Netflix has 220.6 million users.
Disney+, which also launched in Romania in June, reached 152 million users, up 14.4 million from three months ago. Hulu has reached 46 million users.
Disney group suffered a loss of $1.1 billion in its streaming business, mainly due to rising prices for creating new content.
For Disney+, the company revised its projections for the number of users it wants to reach by the end of 2024. The target is 215-245 million users, up from 230-260 million, which was the target set more than a year ago.
Disney+ will launch an ad-supported version at the end of the year, and in 2023 it will be Netflix’s turn to launch a cheaper ad-supported subscription.
