Netflix loses again: Disney surpasses it in subscriber count

His fight goes on forever streaming and Netflix’s retreat when Disney first overtook it in subscriber numbers internationally at the end of June.

Specifically, Walt Disney Co had 221.1 million subscribers in June compared to 220.7 million for Netflix. Of course, it is noted that Disney has three streaming platforms: Disney+, Hulu and sports ESPN+.

“Disney is gaining market share while Netflix is struggling to get more subscribers. Disney still has room to expand in international markets, where the company is growing rapidly and constantly attracting new customers,” said Harris Anwar, an analyst at Investing.com.

More Expensive Ad-Free Subscription Plan Announced

At the same time, Disney intends to “copy” Netflix: by the end of 2022, it will also provide a more expensive ad-free subscription to Disney+ and Hulu. An ad-free viewing subscription will increase by 38% to $10.99 in December when it starts offering a new option that will also include ads at the current price.

To attract new subscribers, Disney will offer a new ad-supported subscription option starting Dec. 8 that will cost the same as the current ad-free version ($7.99 per month). Subscriptions to Hulu (which is majority owned by the Walt Disney Co.) will also increase by a dollar or two a month in December.

Disney+ now predicts it could have 245 million subscribers worldwide by the end of September 2024. The company expects its streaming division to turn a profit for the first time in 2024.

In the last quarter of 2022, the company posted a loss of $1.1 billion. Disney’s total revenue from all activities reached $21.5 billion at the end of June this year (up 26% year-over-year).

Shares of Disney rose on the US stock market late Wednesday after the aforementioned announcements, posting an increase of about 7%.
