
Launched in December 2002 Porsche Cayenne celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Starting with the concept, the Stuttgart firm studied several body options, in addition to the classic five-door SUV.
Not less than three versions additional models were envisioned: a coupe version that will see the light of day in 2019 on the third generation of the model, a version lengthened by 20 centimeters, which allows you to add a third row of seats, as well as a convertible version.
Porsche Cayenne Cabriolet: a unique example

Porsche Cayenne Cabriolet: soft top in Targa style
Only the design of the rear was the subject of heated debate at Porsche, and so this example presented two versions of the trunk: the left taillight is lower and the right taillight is higher, with a more imposing trunk. .
For the hood mechanism, the trunk of this Cayenne Cabriolet opened both forwards and backwards, allowing the hood to be stored under the tailgate, folded in a “Z” shape. AND a process similar to the Porsche 911 Targa Type 991.
The Porsche Cayenne Cabriolet never made it into production
If the Cayenne Coupé concept created in 2002 was finally produced in 2019, during the third generation of the model, Porsche finally abandoned the idea of a convertiblewhich never reached the stage of production.
Porsche had indeed decided that the model would not be profitable, and doubts remained about its design, which was not as attractive as expected: “The Cabriolet SUV is both an aesthetic and a technical challenge”says Michael Mauer, Head of Porsche Design: “The SUV always has a wide and heavy body. If you combine that with a smaller top and remove the roof, you get some pretty weird shapes.”.
