John Legend said that Donald Trump is the reason why he is no longer friends with Kanye West.

The singer-songwriter revealed in a new interview that their political differences were too great to maintain a strong friendship after years of creative collaboration.

John Legend said on The Ax Files podcast, “Kanye and I aren’t the same friends we used to be. I sincerely believe that because we publicly disagreed that he was running for president and supporting Trump, we were unable to maintain our friendship.”

West co-produced Legend’s 2004 debut album Get Lifted and released the record on his own label, GOOD Music. The two artists have collaborated many times.

John Legend added that he could not support West’s 2020 presidential bid: “I wasn’t alone in this, but, you know, he wasn’t happy about it. And we haven’t really been close since then.”

However, the musician added that he still respects Kanye West and admires his honesty.

“I think he’s been very open about his struggles with mental health issues,” Legend continued. And he’s very real, to be honest. So I think there’s little that people don’t understand about him.”
