
Under a special plan, road safety and traffic police measures have been strengthened, with a strong police presence on the road network, train stations, ports and airports, and a ban on trucks on national roads. Greek police, from Friday, in connection with the celebration fifteenth of august 2022, for the safe movement of citizens and the prevention of traffic accidents, throughout the country’s highway network.
Among other things, the plan provides for the formation of traffic police teams to check dangerous violations that led to serious and fatal traffic accidents (speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal overtaking, using mobile phones while driving, using a safety helmet, etc. .), but also an information campaign, where it is necessary to widely inform the population about the presence of any traffic jams and other problems.
To implement the measures, all traffic services will be put on alert, while patrol cars, motorcycles and ordinary vehicles will be available with appropriate personnel and equipment to effectively guard the country’s road network.
As announced by the Hellenic Army Headquarters, the detailed measures include:
• protection of the road network by sector, based on the specific traffic conditions in each region,
• Increased police presence and targeted protection on sections of the road network where traffic accidents often occur,
• intensive traffic protection measures at the entrances and exits of major urban centers where there is an increased traffic flow,
• special actions and measures to increase traffic in cities,
• enhanced transport measures in crowded places (airports, ports, railway stations, etc.).
Truck ban
For the safer movement of vehicles and the improvement of traffic, during the celebration period on August 15, a ban on the movement of all trucks with a maximum authorized mass of more than 3.5 tons on highway sections and national roads will be introduced on the following days and hours as follows:
1. Friday, August 12, 2022 from 16:00 to 21:00 and Saturday, August 13, 2022 from 08:00 to 13:00 for output current.
2. On Monday, August 15, 2022, from 16:00 to 23:00, for the input current of the entire national trunk network, especially on the A1 motorway (Athens-Thessaloniki-Evzoni), in the current Thessaloniki, a ban will apply from 18.00 until 24.00, from the Makrichori toll road to the Kleydio junction.
For the safety of citizens, the traffic police recommends drivers:
• Before you travel, check your vehicle and get information about the state of the road network and weather conditions.
• Be especially careful while driving and follow the rules of the road.
• Respect the road markings and follow the instructions of the traffic police.
• Do not use mobile phones or other distracting devices while driving.
• Do not drink alcoholic beverages if they are going to drive.
• Use child seats to protect children in the car.
• Must be ‘fastened’ by seat belts and helmets on motorcycles.
• Do not overestimate your driving skills and the technical capabilities of your vehicles.
• Respect and protect fellow travelers and other people using the road network by driving responsibly and carefully.
