Latvia again receives gas from Russia – RBC writes about this on Monday, August 8, citing data from the Latvian operator for the transport and storage of natural gas Conexus Baltic Grid. As reported, gas from the Russian Federation enters the country through the “Luhamaa” gas metering station located in Estonia.
Latvia refused to supply Russian gas in early April after deciding not to comply with Moscow’s demands to pay Russian gas in rubles. However, in June, the main operator of Latvia’s gas transport system, Latvijas gāze, resumed purchases. At the same time, Latvijas gāze emphasized that raw materials are not purchased directly from Gazprom, and transactions are carried out in euros.
At the end of July, Russian state-owned company “Gazprom” stopped supplying Latvia with gas “due to violation of gas withdrawal conditions”. Gazprom did not specify what kind of violations are at issue.
Riga to ban Russian gas imports from 2023
On July 14, the Latvian Saeima decided to completely ban the supply of natural gas from Russia from January 1, 2023. In 2021, Riga purchased about 90% of this raw material from the Russian Federation.
In accordance with Moscow’s requirement, from April 1, “hostile countries”, in the list of which the Russian authorities have included the member states of the European Union, must make arrangements for gas supply through Gazprombank with the mandatory conversion of the currency contract (euros and dollars) in Russian rubles – otherwise the export will be terminated. Poland, Bulgaria, Finland, the Netherlands and Denmark refused to comply with these conditions, after which Russia stopped gas supplies to these countries.
