According to the source, 157 international federations out of 179 present voted for the Russian, who has held the post of president since 2018.

Dvorkovich’s counter-candidate was Ukrainian grandmaster Andrii Baryshpolets, who, however, received only 16 votes, five federations abstained, writes Agerpres.

Shortly before the vote, a Ukrainian accused Dvorkovich of “huge connections with the Russian government.”

“You, Arkady, are responsible for what is happening in Ukraine now. You are responsible for the rise of the Russian government and the Russian military machine. How can we, the world of chess, afford to elect Mr. Dvorkovich? said Baryshpolets.

Dvorkovich (50 years old) replied that he takes a “decisive position regarding the tragic events in Ukraine.”

In March, Arkady Dvorkovich, the deputy prime minister of the Russian Federation from 2012 to 2018, became one of the leading voices in Russia to question the justification for the war in Ukraine when he told American media that he was thinking about the fate of Ukrainian civilians. .

“Wars don’t just kill lives. Wars kill hopes and aspirations, freeze or destroy relationships and connections between people,” he told an American news site at the time.
