Russia is massing troops in southern Ukraine, but the purpose of strengthening the position is not yet clear, British intelligence services warn, saying that Russian troops may be preparing for a new assault or simply anticipate a counteroffensive from the Ukrainians.
According to the source, long convoys of Russian military trucks, tanks, towed artillery and other weapons continue to leave Donbas and head southwest. It was also reported that equipment is being moved from Russian-controlled Melitopol, Berdyansk, Mariupol and from the Russian mainland via the Kerch Bridge to Crimea. Tactical battalions numbering 800 to 1,000 servicemen have been deployed to Crimea and will almost certainly be used to support Russian troops in the Kherson region.
On August 2, 2022, a new battalion was deployed to Crimea, others are also being redeployed from the Eastern Group of Forces. They will probably be sent to the Kherson region in the coming days.
According to the source, in the occupied south, the Ukrainian army continues to attack the enemy’s rear, hitting bridges, ammunition depots and railway junctions.
“Russia’s war against Ukraine will soon enter a new phase. The most intense battles will be transferred to the front with a length of about 350 km – from Zaporizhzhia to Kherson,” – claim the British special services.
