“Batgirl”: cynical “cutting” of the blockbuster

One of the plots that most of all “played” in the world cinema news of recent days was unexpected decision by Warner Bros. cancel the release of “Batgirl”; new movie from DC comics with a rising star in the title role Leslie Grace. Attention, this is not about a postponement, but about the final cancellation of the film, which is in the post-production stage, i.e. has already completed all his shooting, bypassing the studio almost 90 million dollars.

Warner’s official justification was that “the quality of the result did not meet our expectations and the high standards we set for the entertainment of the public,” but those in the know believe that the decision probably hides … tax benefits. Simply put, thus Warner will write much less damage compared to the disastrous release of the film, behind which, in addition, there will be a very expensive advertising campaign.

However, it is even more likely that this decision is due to another strategy that the powerful new CEO of Warner Bros. wants to impose. – Opening, David Zaslav. Let’s not forget that in 2021, the studio he now runs did not hesitate to send all of the year’s filmography to HBO Max at the same time as it was released in theaters under the pretext of a pandemic, thereby undermining a fundamental cinematic convention. Zaslav, for his part, seems to believe the exact opposite: that the really big movies deserve to “travel” to theaters while the rest can go to platforms or even “die” like Batgirl if he decides they are. economically beneficial. beneficial.

But here we are not talking about, for example. for a problematic batch of parts, which is immediately sent for recycling. Making a film, especially with such a budget, entails creative efforts of hundreds of people (directors, writers, actors, etc.) and their dreams of ending it all, as star Lesley Grace recently described in an emotionally charged post about a seven-month shoot in Scotland.

The cynicism with which Batgirl was cut could simply be called best corporate practice to better balance the studio’s finances. On the other hand, viewers “smell” something similar and gradually realize that their once favorite movie, it is gradually becoming a consumer pool with a very short shelf life and little real value.
