UN: North Korea prepares for first nuclear test since 2017

North Korea is preparing to carry out its first nuclear test since 2017, according to the UN. In recent months, construction work has been seen at an underground test site in the north of the country. This was reported on Friday, August 5, by the dpa agency, citing a confidential UN report.

“Work at the Pungeri nuclear test site is paving the way for additional nuclear testing to develop nuclear weapons,” the report said. According to the UN, satellite images from the site show that the DPRK is repairing the tunnel network in Pungeri, as well as restoring structures that were demolished in 2018 during negotiations with the United States.

Observers have worried for months that North Korea, after several missile tests, could carry out its first nuclear test in five years. In June, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also recorded activity at the Pungeri test site, where North Korea conducted six nuclear tests from 2006 to 2017.
