Coco Gauff (11 WTA) defeated Japan’s Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16 of the WTA 500 tournament in San Jose. In the same phase of the competition, the main favorite of the Greek Maria Sakkari lost to the American Shelby Rogers with a score of 6-1, 6-3.

Gauff (18), the sixth seed in San Jose, will play second-seeded Paula Badosa of Spain in the next round.

Gauff, more aggressive and enterprising, got the better of his opponent, who was returning to competition after a two-month layoff with a persistent Achilles tendon injury.

The former world number one, currently ranked 41st in the world, is once again coached by her father, Leonard Francois, after two years with Belgium’s Wim Fisset.

Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the ninth seed, completed the table of quarters, winning 6-2, 7-5 ahead of American Claire Liu, reports Agerpres.
