Kara-Murza accused of organizing a conference in support of political prisoners

The investigation brought a new charge against Russian journalist and politician Vladimir Kara-Murza – in carrying out the activities of an “undesirable organization” (part 1 of article 284.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). On Thursday, July 4, his lawyer Vadim Prokhorov wrote on Facebook. According to the lawyer, Kara-Murza is accused of holding the annual conference in support of Russian political prisoners at the Sakharov Center in Moscow on October 27, 2021. According to the Investigative Committee, the event was sponsored by the NGO Free Russia Foundation. .

“1984” Orwell?? No – “Russia – 2022″ Putin!!” – wrote Prokhorov.

Vladimir Kara-Murza left the post of vice president of this organization in August 2021 in order to be able to continue his activities in the Russian Federation. According to Russian law, those who voluntarily ceased cooperation with an “undesirable organization” are exempt from liability.

Kara-Murza was accused of spreading false news about the Russian army

On July 27, his lawyer announced that a new criminal case had been initiated against the oppositionist under part 1 of article 284.1 of the Penal Code “On the activities of a foreign or international non-governmental organization recognized as undesirable on the territory of the Russian Federation.” At the same time, the decision to initiate proceedings was not handed over to the lawyers.

Kara-Murza has been in detention since April 22, 2022 on charges of spreading “fakes” about the Russian army. The reason for this was the politician’s speech in the Arizona House of Representatives on March 15th. In her speech, Kara-Murza in particular said: “Today the whole world sees what the Putin regime is doing to Ukraine. It is dropping bombs on residential areas, hospitals and schools.” For this charge, he faces a prison sentence of 5 to 10 years.

The politician himself does not admit his guilt and calls the case politically motivated. More than 40 famous people have attested to Kara-Murza, including Nobel Prize winner, Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov, writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s widow Natalia Solzhenitsyna, former Yabloko party chairman Grigory Yavlinsky, writer Boris Akunin, former editor-in-chief ” Ekho Moskvy” Alexey Venediktov, a number of deputies of the Moscow City Duma and Moscow municipal districts.
