A photo from ZSL London Zoo, the oldest zoo in the world originally opened for scientific research, has gone viral. In a space set up for the Siamese crocodile, an endangered species, a wallet made of crocodile skin is on display to draw attention to poaching and the illegal wildlife trade, writes the BBC.
In the reptile area, instead of a Siamese crocodile, which is an endangered species, visitors find a wallet made of the skin of such a crocodile. The bag was seized by UK Border Police at a London airport in 2018 and given to a zoo to draw attention to the impact of the illegal wildlife trade.
There are no Siamese crocodiles in London Zoo. There are 500 to 1,000 such specimens left worldwide due to hunting and habitat loss.
The wallet has been in the zoo’s reptile area for some time, but recently a photo taken by a visitor went viral, sparking discussions about the illegal wildlife trade.

Dr Ben Tapley, an amphibian specialist at London Zoo, said he was “delighted” by the scale of the debate: “We wanted to educate our visitors in this direction and raise the alarm.”
According to him, London Zoo works with governments and communities around the world to protect wildlife, support law enforcement agencies aimed at combating human trafficking networks and reduce demand for endangered species, writes the BBC.
