NATO: “Yes” from the US Senate to the entry of Sweden, Finland

More than two-thirds of the US Senate on Wednesday approved the accession of Finland and Sweden to the NATO.

This is the most significant expansion of the thirty-member military alliance since the 1990s, a development that follows the two governments’ historic decision to renounce their neutrality due to Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine on February 24.

The final result was 95 votes to 1 (Josh Hawley, Republican) and one abstention (Rand Paul, Republican), in other words, comfortably exceeding the two-thirds majority (67 votes) required to approve the protocols for the admission of two countries to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

“This historic vote is an important signal of America’s continued bipartisan commitment to NATO and the desire to ensure that our Alliance is ready to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow,” US President Joe Biden said with satisfaction in a press release issued by his services.
