Only murders in the building
COMEDY (2021)
Creative: John Hoffman, Steve Martin
Interpretations: Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez
Another well-known Hulu series is now also available in our country on the Disney+ platform. With comedy legend Steve Martin among the creators as well as the stars, Only Murders in the Building tells the story of three tenants in an old New York City apartment building. A forgotten actor (Martin), a failed director (Martin Short) and a mysterious girl (Selina Gomez) share an obsession with true crime stories. When a body is found in their home – and although everything points to suicide – the three of them join forces to investigate the case. The half-hour series, very willingly referring to black humor, is based on extremely well-developed characters, as well as on the mystery that is watered throughout its plot. This includes many twists and turns and surprises, which, however, usually come naturally and are not rushed. Steve Martin, of course, has a unique style, but Martin Short’s character causes the most laughs. On the other hand, Celina Gomez also looks very good, playing a rather dark and interesting character.

DRAMA (2012)
Producer: Jeff Nichols
Interpretations: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon
From the Cinobo platform, we choose a film that, in fact, marked the return of Matthew McConaughey to big cinema, leaving behind his demons. Two boys are cruising the banks of the Mississippi in their boat when, on an island in the middle of the river, they discover a mysterious man (McConaughey) wanted by both authorities and criminals for murder. Without much thought, they decide to help him in order to escape, and also meet their beloved (Reese Witherspoon).
Geoff Nichols masterfully orchestrates a story drawn from the Mark Twain universe, full of light, childlike innocence from a different time, but also utterly contemporary brutality. All this in an America very different from the one we are used to seeing in the movies, especially with regard to its “white” side. Matthew McConaughey, for his part, is simply breathtaking in one of the best performances of his career that (very unfairly) was not nominated for an Academy Award.
